What is procrastination ? Procrastination is the action of delaying or postponing something, according to the dictionary. Sometimes we fall into procrastination because we believe that we haven't found or figured out how to go about accomplishing what we set out to do. There are many reasons why people procrastinate. Fear of failure, fear of disapproval or focusing on what you should have done rather than moving forward. Being honest, sometimes we are just lazy.
So how do we overcome procrastination? First, start by being aware of your procrastination and identify what is holding you back. Push yourself to get up and move forward, even if you limit yourself to an hour. For some it is fear of speaking to others.
Stop overthinking. Use your affirmations to help calm your fears. "I will try my very best today to accomplish...". "I will do a 15 minute workout each day this week". Remember that things will not always run smoothly and you may have to readjust your plan of action, but that is life and it is ok. We will all fall or fail a few times but get back up and stay on track.
Evaluate your goal. Make your goals realistic. Breaking your goals down into achievable mini goals can assist you in feeling more successful and help to ease the fear of failure. The only real failure is never trying at all.
Learn to value feedback from others. Do not fear constructive criticism, instead learn to embrace it and use it as a learning experience.
Waiting until the last minute to meet deadlines, or putting off what you have told others you will do, shows others that you lack organization or that you lack concern for others. Be mindful that this is causing you stress. Stress can cause us to have a negative outlook and can cause us to make mistakes which then causes us to fear, creating a vicious cycle.
Do not put off things that you can accomplish now. Take the necessary steps to break this bad habit today.
