Making Amends

What is making amends? How is making amends different than an apology? Making amends is a deeper more profound sense of righting a wrong. The definition of make amends is to do something to correct a mistake that one has made or a bad situation that one has caused.

Making amends to ourselves is very important; but how do we do that. First we need to understand that we are human and we all make mistakes. Acknowledge and take accountability for your mistakes, then forgive yourself. Do not fall into a pit of self blame or self shame. A good way to start is by writing yourself an apology letter. What did you do, why did you do it, and what was going through your mind at the time? How can you make it right? When you have finished writing the letter read it out loud and then rip it up or burn it; let it go!

If you have wronged someone apologize to them. Reach out and try to right your wrong. Even if they do not except your apology you will have owned up to your actions and tried to make amends. Although we want to help those we have hurt to heal; this is for you as well. Cleansing yourself and letting go of the negativity that has held you back.

Apologize to yourself and shower yourself with love and positivity. Make a plan to live better and to learn how to recognize past mistakes. Using your past as a lesson will allow you to avoid repeating the same mistakes in the future. Focus on turing your negatives into positives.

There are so many ways that you can begin to heal from your past. Take the first step today. We all have pasts but we also have futures. Only you can decide what your future will be.
